(A) Publishing registers and copyrights the artist works. This registration protects the works from being stolen or used by other artist. This process is required in order to obtain royalty payments from ASCAP, BMI or any of the other companies that handle this activity.   Publishing is standard practice in the music industry. Q when is the appropriate time to obtain a publisher?

(A) If you plan to obtain a publisher, it would be wise to consult with the publisher for his or her specific requirements. Publishing can be done one work at a time or as an identity of a collection of works.  Different situations and goals will dictate the best approach. It is suggested to consult with a publisher , or research publishing yourself, in the early stages of developing or writing your works..

(A) Yes , many artist are self published. Research both BMI and ASCAP for the proper steps to self publishing.
